Reading the table

Where these countries really differ

Six things we look at in counseling sessions to turn this table into a decision.

Money

Dubai and Ireland open lowest (from ~₹19–23 lakh for the first postgrad year); the USA runs highest but hides the most funding — assistantships and STEM outcomes can flip the maths. The UK's one-year master's means one year of living costs, which quietly beats two-year destinations with cheaper-looking fees.

Speed to a degree

The UK and Ireland finish a master's in 12 months; Singapore is close behind. The USA, Canada, and Australia typically take 1.5–2 years — more time, but also more room for internships and co-ops that feed the job hunt.

Earning while you study

Canada currently allows the most off-campus hours (24/week). Ireland's 40-hour holiday allowance is underrated for covering living costs. Singapore is the strictest of these — plan your finances accordingly.

Work after graduating

Australia's 2–4 year window is the most generous, Canada's up-to-3-year PGWP the most PR-connected, the UK's 18-month Graduate Route the simplest. In the US, everything turns on whether your program carries a STEM code — check the code, not the course name.

Settling long-term

Canada publishes the clearest study-to-PR route, with Australia's points system next. Treat the UK and Ireland as five-year work-route projects, and Singapore and Dubai as world-class career hubs rather than settlement plans.

Distance from home

Dubai (~3–4 hrs) and Singapore (~4–5 hrs) let family visit over a long weekend — a real factor for many North Bengal families. The UK sits in the middle; North America and Australia are the true long hauls.

Quick answers

Common comparison questions

Which country is cheapest for Indian students?
Among the countries we cover, Dubai and Ireland typically have the lowest first-year postgrad budgets (from around ₹19–23 lakh including living), while the USA runs highest. Germany and Malaysia (which we also guide) can be cheaper still. The right answer depends on scholarships — a funded US admit can beat an unfunded 'cheap' option.
Which country gives the best post-study work rights?
Australia's Temporary Graduate stream (2–4 years, longer with regional study) is the most generous. Canada's PGWP (up to 3 years) leads directly into Express Entry for PR. The UK Graduate Route gives 18 months, and US STEM graduates can work up to 3 years on OPT.
Which country is easiest for permanent residency?
Canada has the most defined pathway: study → PGWP → Express Entry or provincial nomination. Australia's points-based system is a close second, especially with regional study. The UK, Ireland, USA, Singapore, and Dubai are stronger as career moves than settlement plans.
