IELTS Band Requirements by Country: UK, USA, Canada, Australia & More
"What band do I need?" has two answers: what the university asks, and what the visa requires. They're not the same number, and mixing them up causes real damage — students over-prepare for a band they don't need, or book a course they can't get a visa for.
Here's the picture for the seven countries we cover, as of our last review. These are typical ranges — a specific program can always ask for more.
Typical university requirements
| Country | Bachelor's (typical) | Master's (typical) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5 (often 6.0 per section) | Top programs ask 7.0+. UKVI IELTS only for below-degree courses |
| USA | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5–7.0 | TOEFL is equally accepted everywhere; top programs want 7.0+ |
| Canada | 6.5 (no band below 6.0) | 6.5 (no band below 6.0) | The "6.5 / 6.0" pattern is near-universal |
| Australia | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5 (6.0 per section) | Nursing/teaching/health ask 7.0+ |
| Ireland | 6.0–6.5 | 6.5 | Similar to the UK pattern |
| Singapore | 6.5 | 6.5–7.0 | NUS/NTU competitive programs effectively want 7.0 |
| Dubai | 5.5–6.0 | 6.0–6.5 | Many branch campuses accept MOI letters instead |
What the visa adds on top
- Australia sets its own English minimums for the student visa, separate from university admission — they were raised in 2024, so verify the current figure for your subclass before relying on an older number.
- The UK requires English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study, which universities certify through their own offer — so in practice the university's requirement is the one that binds you.
- Canada and Ireland lean on the institution's requirement for the study permit; there's no separate higher visa band for a normal degree course.
- The USA has no fixed visa band, but a visa officer who can't hold a conversation with you in English will refuse regardless of your score.
Rules in this table move every year — treat it as a map, and verify the current numbers for your exact course and intake before you book a test. That verification is part of what we do in a counseling session.
Reading a requirement properly
"6.5 overall, 6.0 in each component" means both conditions. A 7.0 overall with a 5.5 in Writing fails the requirement. Section minimums trip up more students than overall bands — plan your preparation around your weakest skill, not your average.
If one section lets you down on test day, remember One Skill Retake exists in India now — one section, within 60 days, without re-sitting everything.
Aim for the requirement, not the maximum
A band above the requirement earns you nothing extra — admission is not ranked by IELTS score. Hit the cut-off with a margin of 0.5 for safety, then spend your remaining energy on the SOP, which actually is ranked. Use the Score Calculator to see exactly what section scores you need for your target overall.

What is IELTS?
The test itself, minus the coaching-centre mystique — format, scoring, cost, and what actually matters for your application.
IELTS vs PTE
Both tests open the same doors for most students — the right pick depends on your shortlist, your typing speed, and how you handle a microphone.
IELTS Validity
Two years — but two years from when, and valid on which date? The timing traps that catch students mid-application.
