How Long Is IELTS Valid? Expiry Rules for Admissions and Visas

The simple answer: an IELTS result is valid for two years from your test date. The complications are all about which date it needs to be valid on — and that's where students get caught.

The three dates that matter

1. When you apply to the university — your score must be valid at the point of application, and most universities also want it valid on the day the course starts.
2. When your visa is filed — immigration authorities check validity at lodgement. A score that was valid when the university admitted you can expire before the visa goes in.
3. When your course begins — some universities (notably in Australia and Canada) want the test taken within two years of the course start date, which is stricter than "valid when you applied".

The trap: a student tests in January 2025 planning a September 2026 intake, defers once, and suddenly the score expires mid-process in January 2027 — right when the visa file needs it. We've seen exactly this cost a student an intake.

The safe timing rule

Take IELTS 9–14 months before your intended course start. That's fresh enough to survive a deferral or a visa delay, and early enough that a disappointing score leaves time for a retake — or a One Skill Retake of just the weak section within 60 days.

Can you retake it?

As often as you like — there's no limit and no waiting period beyond finding a test date. Universities take your best valid score; nobody sees how many attempts it took. The only real costs are the fee and your time.

Does anyone accept an expired score?

Occasionally a university will admit on a recently-expired score — but the visa won't follow. Immigration rules don't bend, so treat two years as a hard wall. If your score has expired or will expire before your visa is filed, budget for a retake now rather than hoping.
