IELTS vs PTE: Which English Test Should You Take in 2026?
Ten years ago the answer was simply "take IELTS". Today PTE Academic is accepted by universities across the UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand — and for some students it's genuinely the better pick. Here's how we compare them across the desk.
The short answer
- Take IELTS if your shortlist includes any university or visa route that's IELTS-only, if you prefer a human examiner for speaking, or if handwriting suits you better than typing.
- Take PTE if you type fast, you're comfortable speaking to a microphone in a room of other test-takers, and you want results in about two days.
- Check your exact shortlist first. Acceptance is university-by-university and visa-by-visa. This is the step people skip, and it's the only one that really matters.

Rough score mapping
Universities publish their own equivalences, but this is the ballpark most work from:

Treat the mapping as indicative — Pearson revised its concordance in 2024–25 and universities update at different speeds. Always check the target university's own published requirement.
Which is "easier"?
Neither — they're just different. Students who freeze in a face-to-face interview often score better on PTE's microphone format. Students with strong handwriting and weaker typing do better on paper IELTS. PTE's AI marking is consistent but unforgiving of unclear pronunciation; IELTS examiners handle accents with more nuance.
What we see in practice: the same student usually lands within half a band / a few points of the same level on either test. The bigger gains come from picking the format that suits your test-taking style — and preparing for that one format properly, once.
The visa angle
Test acceptance for admission and for the visa aren't always the same thing, and rules here change more often than universities' pages do. Australia and the UK accept PTE for student visas; Canada added PTE for study permits in 2023.
