PTE Academic: The Complete Guide for Indian Students
PTE Academic is Pearson's computer-based English test — the main alternative to IELTS for study abroad. It's a single two-hour sitting at a test centre, fully AI-scored, with results typically back in about two days. For the right student, it's the smarter booking.
Who accepts it
PTE Academic is accepted for university admission across the UK, Australia (where it's especially established), New Zealand, Ireland, Canada, and a growing share of US universities. For visas: the UK and Australia accept it for student visas, and Canada has accepted it for study permits since 2023.

Format

Two things surprise first-time takers. First, you speak into a microphone in a room where others are speaking too — practising with background noise matters. Second, many question types score two skills at once (read-aloud scores both reading and speaking), so weak pronunciation quietly drags down more than the speaking score.
Scoring
PTE scores run 10–90, both overall and per skill. Universities publish their own IELTS equivalences; roughly, a 6.5 IELTS maps to around 61–65 on PTE (full mapping table). Scoring is entirely automated — consistent, fast, and strict about clarity. There's no examiner to read your intent; there's only what the microphone heard.
Cost and booking
The fee in India is similar to IELTS — typically a little lower, in the ₹17,000–18,000 range (check Pearson's India site for the current figure). Test dates are frequent, booking is online, and the two-day result makes PTE the rescue option when a deadline is close and you need a score this week.
Who PTE suits — and who it doesn't
It suits you if you type quickly, speak clearly at a steady pace, and prefer objective computer marking to a human interview. It's also the practical choice when you need results fast.
Think twice if your spoken English is fluent but heavily accented or very fast — the AI is less forgiving than an IELTS examiner — or if your shortlist has even one IELTS-only requirement, in which case one IELTS booking covers everything.
