Resume Guide: The Student CV for University Applications
Most students paste a job-hunting resume into their university application and call it done. But an admissions CV has a different reader with a different question: not "can this person do the job?" but "does this profile support the story the SOP tells?" The CV is supporting evidence — and evidence has rules.
Format: boring on purpose
One page for fresh graduates; two only with 3+ years of real work history. Clean single-column layout, a readable 10.5–11pt font, generous margins, exported as PDF with a professional filename (Priya_Sharma_CV.pdf). No photo, no date of birth, no parent names, no declaration line with your signature — those conventions belong to Indian job applications, not international admissions. No skill bars, no design-portfolio flourishes (unless you're applying to design school, where the portfolio is a separate document anyway).
Contact block: name, city, one phone, one professional email, LinkedIn if it's current. That's all.
Section order for a student CV
- Education — degree, institution, board/university, year, and your percentage or CGPA stated plainly. Admissions officers will find your marks anyway; hiding them just wastes their patience. Class 12 and 10 belong here for undergrad applicants; degree-first for master's.
- Projects and research — for most applicants this is the heart of the document. Name, one line of what you built or investigated, tools used, and an outcome. Three strong entries beat eight thin ones.
- Work experience / internships — reverse-chronological, achievement-phrased: "built the weekly sales dashboard used by 3 managers" beats "responsible for reporting duties".
- Skills — a short, honest line of tools and languages. No percentages, no star ratings, nothing you can't discuss for five minutes in an interview.
- Awards, certifications, activities — only entries that carry weight: a state-level debate final, an NPTEL certification relevant to the course, a genuine leadership role. School attendance prizes dilute the real entries.
Writing entries that read as evidence
Each bullet: action verb + what + measurable outcome where one exists. "Analysed three years of tea-estate yield data in Excel; forecasting model adopted for the 2025 season" is a paragraph of credibility in one line. Keep tense consistent (past roles in past tense), expand acronyms a foreign reader won't know, and cut anything you couldn't survive two follow-up questions about — the CV walks into your visa interview with you.
The consistency check
Before submitting, put the CV beside your SOP and LOR briefs: same dates, same project names, same story. If your SOP's centrepiece project is one vague line in the CV, promote it. If the CV lists an internship the SOP contradicts, fix one of them. Committees don't cross-examine documents — they just quietly downgrade files that disagree with themselves.
