TOEFL iBT: The Complete Guide for Indian Students
TOEFL iBT is ETS's English test — the one American universities have used for decades. If your shortlist is US-heavy, TOEFL remains the most natural fit; it's also accepted in Canada, the UK, Australia, and most other destinations, though acceptance for visa purposes varies more than IELTS or PTE.
Format — shorter than its reputation
ETS cut the test down in 2023; today's TOEFL iBT runs under two hours in a single sitting:

Like PTE, speaking is into a microphone, not to a person. Unlike PTE, the content skews distinctly academic — campus conversations, lecture excerpts — which suits students who've consumed a lot of American course material and podcasts.
Scoring
Each section scores 0–30, totalling 0–120. Rough equivalences universities work from: an 80–90 total corresponds to about a 6.5 IELTS; 94–101 to about 7.0. Top US programs typically want 90–100+; many state universities admit in the 79–90 range. As always, the university's published number is the one that binds — equivalence tables are approximations.
Results arrive in about 4–8 days. ETS also offers the TOEFL Home Edition (taken at home under live proctoring) — accepted by many US universities, but not reliably accepted for visas elsewhere; for UK or Australian routes, book a test-centre sitting.

TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE?

- US-heavy shortlist → TOEFL or IELTS, both universally accepted; TOEFL's academic style suits many US-bound profiles.
- UK / Australia / Canada shortlist → IELTS or PTE — both are cleanly accepted for admission and visas.
- Mixed shortlist → IELTS is still the single test that every destination on your list will take without a follow-up question.
