UK, USA, Canada or Australia? Choosing the Right Study Abroad Destination
"Which country is best?" is the question we hear most. The real answer is that there's no single best — there's a best for your goal, your budget and your profile. Here's how we separate the four countries North Bengal families ask about most.
If you want a top degree quickly: the UK
The UK's one-year master's is its biggest advantage. You finish a full year earlier than most countries, and the Graduate Route currently lets you stay and work for 18 months afterwards.
It suits students who want a recognised name without committing four years away from home. Anishka went from Siliguri to an MSc in Forensic Psychology at the University of Manchester; Ayush to an MSc in Finance & Management at Glasgow; Harsh into a Master's at the London School of Economics. Different fields, same logic — a strong, fast degree with a clear work window.
One caution: London tuition and rent run roughly 30% above the same-tier program in Manchester, Birmingham or Coventry, and many of those cities place graduates into the same employers. Don't pay the London premium unless the course earns it.
If you want the world's top names and STEM work: the USA
The United States has the widest choice of universities anywhere, the deepest research funding, and — for STEM degrees — up to three years of post-study work through OPT.
It rewards a sharp, specific profile and a realistic view of cost. The first conversation we always have about the US is funding: a fully funded admit at a strong state university often beats an unfunded seat at a bigger name once you account for the debt. We optimise for outcome, not the logo on the sweatshirt.
If you're thinking long-term settlement: Canada
Canada still has the most defined study-to-PR pathway among the major destinations, through Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs. Gurveer, one of our students, is now at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver; Beenam went into a hospitality program at Georgian College.
But the 2024–2025 changes mean program selection is the whole game now — some college programs no longer qualify for the post-graduation work permit at all. This is one destination where good counselling genuinely changes the outcome, because we screen eligibility before you commit a rupee.
If you want lifestyle and a strong stay-back: Australia
Australia pairs some of the most generous post-study work rights in the world with a lifestyle students love. Anirudha is doing a Master of Professional Engineering at Curtin on a 25% scholarship; Karan is on a Bachelor of Software Engineering at RMIT; Shreya is studying Nursing at Queensland University of Technology.
Two things worth knowing: regional study (think Adelaide, Hobart, Wollongong) often comes with three years of stay-back instead of two, plus lower fees — quietly excellent value. And since 2024, the "Genuine Student" requirement is read strictly, so the SOP carries more weight than ever.
A quick way to compare on the numbers
| Destination | Tuition / yr | Post-study work | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | GBP 15,000–45,000 | 18 months (Graduate Route) | A fast, recognised degree |
| USA | USD 25,000–55,000 | Up to 3 years (STEM OPT) | Top names, research, STEM |
| Canada | CAD 15,000–35,000 | Up to 3 years (PGWP) | A defined PR pathway |
| Australia | AUD 20,000–45,000 | 2–4 years (subclass 485) | Lifestyle + stay-back |
Figures are indicative and change with policy — each destination guide shows a "last updated" date so you know how fresh the numbers are.
How we'd actually decide with you
We don't start from the country. We start from you — your goal, your marks, your budget — and let that point to the destination. If you want that read in two minutes, the Course Finder will give you an indicative match. If you want it properly, with a costed shortlist, book a session and we'll work through it together.
